The average weekly earnings for clerical and operative workers in the construction industry has increased from £410.91 to £470.81, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office this morning.

In the 12 months between June 2000 and June 2001 earning rose by 14.6 per cent - an increase of 17.3 per cent in the hourly rate paid to all grades from £9.01 to £10.57.

The number of hours worked per week decreased by 2.2 per cent, from 45.6 hours to 44.6 hours, while weekly earnings for adult unskilled workers rose by 17.8 per cent from £397.37 to £468.16 between June 2000 and the same month in 2001.

The hourly rate rose from £8.37 to £10.13 and the number of hours worked each week fell from 47.5 to 46.2.

Skilled workers saw their weekly earnings increase by 12.5 per cent from £487.67 to £548.44 over the same period representing a rise of 14.5 per cent in the hourly rate and a fall of 1.7 per cent in the average number of hours worked.
