Names and addresses of convicted sex offenders should be made available to the general public, a conference of members of the Garda will hear tonight.

The Association of Garda Sergeants (AGSI) is to vote on the motion at its three-day annual conference in Cork.

The motion, put forward by members of the force in the Wexford and Wicklow divisions, is one of more than 50 to be voted on by delegates.

It proposes that "Conference directs the National Executive to call on the Minister to ensure that information relating to the presence of convicted paedophiles/sex offenders in the community be made accessible to the public."
