THE FAMILY of a 52-year-old woman who went missing in Navan, Co Meath one week ago have said they are becoming increasingly concerned for her safety.

Margaret Mawhinney, originally from Mayo, went missing from her home on the Trim road in Navan last Tuesday at about 9.50am. She was last seen at the railway crossing on the Trim road about 15 to 20 minutes later walking on the right-hand side of the road in the direction of Navan town.

She is described as 5ft 1in, with short brown hair and glasses. When last seen she was wearing grey trousers, a black knee-length coat and a dark head scarf.

Her family believes that she had intended to go for a short walk as she had not brought her handbag, mobile phone or umbrella, despite a forecast of rain.

Ms Mawhinney has not previously gone missing. However, her family said she suffered from depression and could have wandered farther than she intended from her home and may have become disorientated. They also said she may appear quite upset, confused and withdrawn.

Ms Mawhinney’s family along with a large number of neighbours and local people spent last weekend searching fields and woodlands near a tributary of the river Boyne, close to the Trim road.

The search has now been extended to include Mayo and Glasnevin in Dublin where she previously lived.
