COMPLAINTS BY air passengers about flight cancellations and delays went up 25 per cent last year, according to the Commission for Aviation Regulation.

About one-third of complaints investigated resulted in the payment of compensation to the passenger, a refund of the cost of the ticket or the reimbursement of expenses incurred.

Three out of every four complaints related to flight cancellations, and 17 per cent to long delays. Ryanair was the airline with the most complaints, 62, ahead of Aer Lingus, which received 45. All other airlines were the subject of 63 complaints.

Of the 413 complaints received, 179 related to departure from an Irish airport and were investigated by the commission. Some 227 complaints concerned departure from an airport in another state.
