A planning application for a €25 million incinerator South Tipperary has been withdrawn by the animal rendering company Ronan Industries.

In a statement the company also said it was withdrawing its Environmental Protection Agency application for the same project - which was to be based at Rosegreen, between Cashel and Clonmel.

The development for a burner unit for waste disposal by way of thermal treatment of selected animal by-products and/or waste was to have been carried out by National By-Products, which is part of Ronan Industries.

The company said today its proposal adhered to strict environmental standards and would not have had an adverse affect on the surrounding area.

The plan attracted widespread opposition. The horse trainer Mr Aidan O'Brien and the Magnier family challenged the decision to grant planning permission the incinerator near their lands in the High Court.

The South Tipperary Anti-Incinerator Campaign collected more than 23,000 signatories opposing the development.
