LAW REFORM:The Cabinet will today discuss the appointment as the new president of the Law Reform Commission of former High Court judge Mr Justice John Quirke, who retired from the courts earlier this year.
The position has been vacant for more than a year since the position of Mrs Justice Catherine McGuinness was not renewed by the last government.
Justice Quirke was appointed to the High Court in 1997 and, as the judge managing the personal injury case list, prepared a report on phased payments for people who suffered catastrophic injuries. He chaired a forum on turf cutting, producing a 166-page report proposing a resolution. At 17, he was the youngest Irish international rugby player.
