Alison Coffey’s hopes of becoming the first Irish winner of the Women’s British Amateur Championship, since Lilian Behan 17 years ago, fell just short at Ashburnham in Wales this afternoon.

The 29-year-old Warrenpoint member lost her semi-final against Kent-born Australian Lindsey Wright by a 3&2 margin.

In the other semi-final Rebecca Hudson, winner of this title two years ago, comfortably beat Germany’s Denise Simon by 4&3.

Perhaps Coffey’s gruelling 24 hole victory in the third round, against another Australian Vicky Uwland, finally caught up with her. No sooner had Coffey come off the course yesterday, 15 minutes later she was teeing it up again against her next opponent.

Coffey later admitted to "feeling flat" and suffering a headache at the end of yesterday’s play.

Hudson will take on Wright in this afternoon’s final to see who will be crowned champion.
