More than 300 residents of Clogheen, Co Tipperary, voted by secret ballot last night to accept 15 asylum-seekers into the village. The vote is understood to have been 161 to 63 against.
Locals at St Paul's Community Hall were told of the outcome of negotiations between the Justice for Clogheen community committee and the owner of the Vee Valley Hotel, Mr Rory O'Brien.
On Monday, both sides agreed on proposals to house 15 asylum-seekers in the hotel subject to acceptance by the local community.
The agreement is subject to a review after six months which could lead to additional asylum-seekers coming to the village. The number is capped at 20 asylum-seekers.
Local committee representatives also outlined the negotiations it had with the Central Directorate for Refugee and Asylum-Seeker Services, which took place last week.
The Clogheen delegation was told that the hotel would house family units of the same ethnic background or come from adjoining or neighbouring countries.
It was also told that every small town would at some time have to take asylum-seekers.
