WASHINGTON - Two polls following last Wednesday's second and final presidential debate showed President Clinton maintaining a lead of more than 20 points over the Republican challenger, Mr Bob Dole.

A Newsweek survey found Mr Clinton leading by 52 per cent to 29 per cent over Mr Dole, with the Reform Party candidate, Mr Ross Perot, at 8 per cent. A separate CNN USA Today poll placed Mr Clinton's lead at 55 per cent to 32 per cent for Mr Dole, with 8 per cent for Mr Perot.

The Newsweek survey also found a majority of people objected to campaign contributions from big corporations and foreign donors, but that only 34 per cent believed Mr Clinton's acceptance of funds from a wealthy Indonesian family was "very important".
