More than 50 climate change protestors who spent the night on the roof of the Houses of Parliament have been charged with trespass, Scotland Yard said tonight.

The demonstration by Greenpeace supporters in October last year was aimed at MPs returning from their summer break.

Demonstrators carried a banner which said: “Change the politics, save the climate”.

Among those charged are 23 people accused of trespassing on a protected site on October 11th last year. Another seven were charged with the same offence but between October 11th and 13th.

All 30 will appear at City of Westminster magistrates’ court on March 23rd.

Another 24 are accused of trespass between October 11th and 13th and will appear at the same court on the following day.

The police claim that the remaining defendant, Frank Hewetson (44) of north west London, “did aid, abet, counsel or procure the trespass by 54 other people on to the Palace of Westminster”.

He will also appear before City of Westminster Magistrates on March 24th.
