UP TO 300 environmental protesters are expected to gather in a field in Co Tyrone today in opposition to an 80km stretch of dual-carriageway through the county.

The five-day Climate Camp 2010, taking place at Victoria Bridge, south of Strabane, runs until August 16th.

Various cycle caravans, including a group of 20 cyclists from Galway, are making their way to the site to join Ireland’s second Climate Camp event following the 2009 meeting under the shadow of Shannonbridge power station, which represented a stand against peat burning.

This year the camp is occupying the field to support local residents who are opposed to a new dual-carriageway in Tyrone, part of the A5 western transport corridor route from Aughnacloy to Derry.

The 80km stretch of road will run through Victoria Bridge, two miles south of the village of Sion Mills.

Spokeswoman Molly Walsh said: “We support the local people in their efforts to resist this route on environmental grounds.”

The camp includes a communal, fully vegan kitchen and all power needs will be catered for by wind turbines and solar panels.
