Counties Galway and Mayo have been among the worst hit by flooding, with a number of roads in rural areas becoming impassable.

A spokeswoman for Galway Council said Loughrea and Athenry were among the worst-hit areas, with huge areas of farmland under water. She said the rain had largely stopped in the region.

Flooding has also been reported inCo Meath and in many areas of Dublin city.

Met Éireann said that rain will gradually clear through this morning and early afternoon, with the afternoon predicted to be sunny with scattered showers. Tomorrow will be mainly dry, with sunny spells.

Gardaí said there have been no reports of any injuries caused by the adverse weather. Up to 20 people have been killed across Europe in stormy conditions over the past week.

ESB emergency crews were out early this morning to restore power to a number of homes in isolated parts of west Wicklow and east Laois. They had been cut off during the powerful storms at the weekend.

More than 1,000 homes around the country had power restored early yesterday, leaving fewer than 400 to be reconnected by last night.
