Bangui - Libyan-backed presidential guards and rebel troops in the Central African Republic's capital fired artillery shells and mortar bombs at each other yesterday in a new eruption of clashes.
Bangui was plunged into chaos at the weekend after an apparent bid by President Ange-Felix Patasse's guard to arrest the country's sacked army chief, Gen Francois Bozize. Long-term ally Libya sent military equipment and dozens of troops to bolster President Patasse.
