A WITNESS at the inquest into the SAS killings of three IRA members in Gibraltar, Ms Carmen Proetta, has settled her claim for damages against RTE, the High Court was told yesterday.

The President of the High Court, Mr Justice Costello, was also told, however, that Ms Proetta is still pursuing her libel action for damages against the former Sunday Times Editor, Mr Andrew Neil. She claims she was libelled in remarks allegedly made by Mr Neil on an RTE Late Late Show in October 1993.

A previous court hearing was told the matter concerned a long and expensive libel action against Mr Neil and it was likely it would be necessary to take evidence outside the jurisdiction. That hearing was also told Ms Proetta had been involved in a number of libel actions in Britain and had been awarded in excess of £300,000.

Yesterday Mr Adrian Hardiman SC, for Ms Proetta, told Mr Justice Costello that litigation against RTE had been settled on terms between the parties and that that action could be struck out on consent.
