What is variant CJD?

CJD is a one of a group of rare and fatal diseases in humans and animals that affect the brain's structure. Variant CJD is believed to be the human from of BSE and is contracted by eating infected beef.

It is a bleeding disorder where there is inadequate clotting factor in the blood. The most common types involve a deficiency in clotting factors VIII and IX. Treatment involves the use of concentrated preparations of the missing clotting factor in order to prevent excessive bleeding leading to damage to the joints and other parts of the body.
