MADRID - Veterans of the International Brigades began to arrive yesterday to hononr comrades in arms who died for the Republican cause in Spain's 1936-1939 civil war.
"Long live the Republic," shouted Mr Emanuel Mink (86), a Polish born, French citizen, as he arrived at the city's Barajas airport. He was among the first of 400 veterans expected in Madrid, this week, 60 years after foreign volunteers took up arms in the name of democracy in a conflict which became an ideological rehearsal for the second World War.
