A Cityjet flight bound for Shannon from Paris was last night forced to divert to London’s Gatwick airport after the crew reported smoke in the cabin.

The flight, which was being operated on behalf of Air France, was en route from Charles de Gaulle airport when the incident happened.

There were 24 passengers and four crew members on board the flight.

Emergency services which were on stand-by when the craft landed were not needed as the plane landed without incident.

“Flight 5082 diverted to Gatwick as a precaution and in the interest of safety after smoke was reported in the cabin. It is not clear where the smoke came from, but it may have been from the air conditioning system. Engineers are still investigating the issue at Gatwick," A Cityjet spokesperson said.

The passengers were subsequently booked on a Dublin-bound flight and bussed to Shannon where they arrived at 1am today.
