EXPO Limerick '98, with its theme of "Recruitment and Living and Learning in Limerick" ended on a bang on Saturday night with a fireworks display from the Civic Offices Complex that lit up the city skyline, Arthur Quinlan writes from Limerick. This followed a major open air carnival and an earlier parade of marching bands, street theatre groups, jugglers and novelty acts, watched by a crowd of over 20,000 people.
The two-day Recruitment Fair which was opened at the University by the Minister for Arts, Culture, and the Gaeltacht and the Islands, Ms De Valera, and organised in association with The Irish Times, was attended by up to 15,000 job seekers. Some of the 25 participating companies reported that the response was very positive and a series of job interviews were arranged for some of the 2,000 positions offered.
Mr Jim Kenny, vice-chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Expo' 98 executive committee said: "We are very pleased with the response to recruitment, both from local and regional job applicants. Major companies such as Del Computers, Esat Digifone, Analog Devices and Shannon Aerospace considered that the quality of applicants was particularly high."
Mr Gerry Clancy, Expo chairman, said the Recruitment Show was the biggest event of its kind held in the mid-west.
