The Central Intelligence Agency confirmed today that a CIA officer was killed during a prisoner uprising at a fortress near the northern Afghanistan town of Mazar-i-Sharif.
CIA Director George Tenet said in a statement Johnny Mike Spann, who worked for the CIA's clandestine Directorate of Operations, was where he wanted to be: on the frontlines serving his country.
Spann is the first American known to have been killed in action in the military campaign against the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan, which started with air strikes on October 7th.
