Next Friday the Archbishop of Dublin will preside at a service to mark the 70th anniversary of the consecration of the parish church of St George and St Thomas in Cathal Brugha Street which was conducted by Archbishop Gregg on St Thomas's Day 1931.

St Thomas's parish church was erected in the middle of the 18th century in Marlborough Street to serve the fashionable quarter of the city around Rutland Square.

The church was seriously damaged in 1922 and was replaced by a new church in the Lambardic style which was built on the site of the parochial hall. The design of the architect, F.G. Hicks, won the gold medal of the Royal Institute of Architects and a silver medal at the Tailteann exhibition.

Following the closure of St George's in 1990, the church became the parish church of St George and St Thomas and has an active inner-city witness with, in particular, successful lunchtime lecture series. It is currently served by the Rev Katherine Poulton who is also chaplain to the Mater and Temple Street hospitals and to Mountjoy Prison.
