The Catholic Archbishop of Dublin has directed that the weekend's Share collection, usually used for diocesan development, should go to relieve the appalling distress" of refugees in Rwanda and Zaire. Dr Desmond Connell made his request in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Donnybrook, yesterday.

On the bail referendum, he repeated that "reform of the law will have very limited effect if society blinds itself to the moral good for which we all have personal responsibility in the way we choose to live".
