THE first of this year's children being brought to Ireland by the Chernobyl Children's Project arrive at Shannon Airport at 11.25 a.m. today. The head of the project, Ms Adi Roche, and its national co-ordinator, Ms Helen Faughnan, will welcome them.
Belarussian doctors say the visit will help bolster the children's damaged immune systems through breathing uncontaminated air and eating clean food. They will be accompanied by translators and met by representatives of Project Outreach, who will take them to regional bases where they will be met by host families from Cork, Wexford, Limerick and Tipperary. Another 368 children will be arriving at Shannon tomorrow.
