A MAN who suffered a brain injury at age four when he tragically fell from a cliff on the west Clare coast died of complications of his injuries more than 25 years later, an inquest has heard.

Daniel Madigan (31), Sea View, Quilty, Co Clare, was staying at the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel on the Naas Road with his mother and brother after attending the All Ireland Club Final on March 17th, 2010, when he became unwell and an ambulance was called.

Daniel, who had had a chest infection for a few days and who was on antibiotics, died of pneumonia in hospital two days later.

His brother Kieran Madigan told an inquest into his death at Dublin County Coroner’s Court yesterday that Daniel was injured at Spanish Point at age four when he fell from a cliff while playing.

He told coroner Dr Kieran Geraghty his brother was fine up to six to seven years ago. He had attended school and had a job.

At that stage, a tube which Daniel had inserted at the time of the childhood incident for hydrocephalus became blocked and he had to have an operation. He could not walk after the operation, Kieran said.

Dr Geraghty recorded cause of death as pneumonia secondary to paraplegia, secondary to a fall. Because it went back to the fall he said he would record a verdict of accidental death. He extended his sympathies to Daniel’s family.
