A Irish man suspected of being involved in an international paedophile ring has gone on the run.
In an operation which British police say has led to the rescue of 31 children, officers said on Monday they had broke up a child abuse network co-ordinated through a UK-based internet site called "Kids, the Light of Our Lives".
The investigation, co-ordinated by the UK Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, involved agencies in 35 countries identifying more than 700 suspects. About 200 of these are based in the UK.
The operation lead to the arrest of one man in the Republic. A Garda source said this man had not gone missing. However, ireland.comundertands that another individual, who gardaí wish to speak to in relation to its child pornography investigations, is missing from his home.
There is no evidence to suggest that Irish children were abused as part of the global internet paedophile ring, gardaí have said.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed that it had made two arrests as a result of the investigation.
