A 31-year-old man was released on bail pending further inquiries following an incident in east Belfast which left a two-year-old boy critically injured in hospital and his mother suffering less serious injuries.

The incident happened shortly before 4 pm yesterday when, it is believed, an empty parked car rolled down a distance of the Comber Road in Dundonald and struck the woman who was wheeling a buggy.

The child was rushed to the nearby Ulster Hospital in Dundonald and later transferred to the intensive care unit of the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. He is in a "critical" condition this evening.

The woman suffered injuries which police said were understood to be non life-threatening.

The PSNI has appealed for witnesses.
