School children of all denominations had waited hours to catch a brief glimpse of the queen who was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh.

"There she is," they screeched as the monarch arrived to officially open Lagan Valley Island, the new premises of Lisburn Borough Council.

Wearing a shocking pink coat with matching hat, black patent shoes and pearls, the queen acknowledged her ecstatic young fans with a trademark wave.

Inside, the couple were shown around a recording studio by Lisburn Mayor, Mr Jim Dillon, and Northern Ireland Secretary, Mr John Reid.

During her hour long visit the queen was introduced to local councillors from all parties except Sinn FΘin who declined to attend.

Later, students from four local Catholic grammar schools were among several hundred people who attended the royal visit to Derry.

Queen Elizabeth's first visit to the city since 1953 took place amid tight security at the Ebrington Centre in the mainly loyalist Bond Street area of the Waterside.
