Moscow - Chechen rebels said they killed more than 40 Russian soldiers and wounded 50 others in the Chechen capital Grozny yesterday during an hour-long attack with mortars and rocket-propelled grenades.

Mr Movladi Udugov, one of the Chechen leaders, said that 80 of his fighters targeted the building housing the troops, in the southern Chernorechia district of the city.

Russian officials issued no statement saying they had lost any soldiers yesterday. Mr Udogov said that following the Chechen attack, the Russian forces brought in heavy artillery to bear on Chernorechia.
