Change in the banking sector has been ‘fitful, fragmented and frustratingly slow’ in the two years since the introduction of the bank guarantee scheme, Green Party chairman Dan Boyle has said.
Speaking at the MacGill Summer School in Glenties, Co Donegal, Mr Boyle said change had not come quickly enough to the appointments systems in financial institutions.
Mr Boyle said the failures of Irish Nationwide were proportionately more catastrophic than Anglo, adding “those responsible for failures in Irish Nationwide should account for themselves before the courts”.
In his speech, the deputy leader of Seanad Eireann praised Central Bank governor Patrick Honohan and financial regulator Matthew Elderfield, "who have shown a willingness not to pull punches".
The reports commissioned by the Government from Professor Honohan and international experts Reigling and Watson have been models of clarity, and their bluntness has surprised many, he added.
