The funeral has taken place in Belfast of the 20-year-old Catholic student who died on Monday, ten days after a sectarian assault in the carpark of a Co Antrim nightclub.

Mr Christopher Whitson, a student from Strathmore Park in north Belfast, suffered serious head injuries when he was attacked in the car park of Kelly's nightclub in Portrush the weekend before last.

Mr Whitson, who was studying at Dundee University, had been celebrating his brother's birthday at the club when the attack occurred.

The nightclub remained closed today as a mark of respect.

Three people were arrested in connection with the attack and charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

Mr David Gaston, 20, from Eglish Road and Mr Gary Davison, a 28-year-old van driver from Carnstron Road, both in Broughshane, Co Antrim, are currently on bail pending further charges.
