Legal proceedings taken by the managing director of the Irish Times Limited, Mr Nicholas Chapman, against the company were adjourned at the High Court yesterday for a week.

Mr Justice Lavan was told the case was not yet ready to go on.

Mr Chapman is seeking an interlocutory injunction to prevent the company taking any steps to remove him from his position, except in accordance with the principles of natural and constitutional justice.

Among other orders being sought are injunctions restraining the Irish Times Limited from appointing any person other than Mr Chapman to perform the duties of managing director and from treating him as other than continuing to be employed as managing director.

Mr Chapman is seeking a further order to restrain the Irish Times Limited from publishing or causing to be published in any manner whatsoever any statement or other communication that he is no longer managing director of the company or that he has stepped aside from that position or otherwise ceases to act in any way as managing director.

If necessary, other orders will be sought directing that the Irish Times Limited permits Mr Chapman to carry out all functions of his office and employment as managing director of the company.

It also continues to pay all emoluments to Mr Chapman arising from his appointment as managing director of the company.

In court yesterday, Mr Paul Gardiner SC, for Mr Chapman, said he was awaiting an affidavit from the other side.

He said the case was not yet ready but he was anxious there would be no delay.

Mr Justice Lavan said he would adjourn the case for further mention to Thursday next.

Consideration may be given then to fixing a date for the hearing.

When the proceedings were mentioned in court last week, it was stated the Irish Times Limited is continuing to pay Mr Chapman's salary.
