A man appeared at Tralee District Court yesterday on charges of animal cruelty following the discovery last April of a number of slaughtered goats in a house in Tralee.

Rashid Kibaga (23) of Atlas House, Deerpark, Killarney, faces three charges of animal cruelty at Balloonagh Estate, Tralee, on April 23rd. He is denying the charges.

Supt Jim O’Connor said gardaí arrived at a private house on the date in question and found carcasses of goats, two animal skins and another goat with its head cut off.

Pat Mann, solicitor for Mr Kibaga, said his client, who had refugee status, had been in Ireland since 2008. He said the charges would be “rigorously contested”.

Judge James O’Connor declined to hear the case because of the method of slaughter, and sent it to the Circuit Court for trial. The charges are adjourned to November 30th.
