The North's Chief Medical Officer has predicted that cancer will replace heart disease as Northern Ireland's leading killer. However, suicides and road accidents remain the most common cause of death among the younger generation. In her report, Dr Henrietta Campbell, said: "While deaths from heart disease have been falling, the total number of cancer deaths has been increasing year on year. If the trend over the last 10 years continues, it is predicted that cancer will overtake heart disease as the main cause of death in 2007."
