New speed cameras were set up at accident blackspots today in a move by police to reduce the level of carnage on Northern Ireland's roads.
With the death toll now standing at 82 since the beginning of the year, the fixed-site surveillance equipment began operating on three main routes in the greater Belfast area.
The number of mobile cameras has also been increased from five to seven. They will operate at more than 80 locations throughout Northern Ireland that have been identified as having speeding and high accident numbers. Motorists' fines will be used to pay for more cameras later.
"Speed is one of the biggest killers on our roads and this is a shameful situation," said PSNI superintendent Ian Hamill.
"We need to make sure that the driving public comes to view it to be just as shameful as drink driving. We want to stop people speeding . . . not catch them speeding".
A new TV ad highlighting the dangers of speed also began today.
Police and forensic experts are still trying to determine the cause of the accident that killed four women and a man on Newry's Dublin Road yesterday.
