KABUL – An Afghan journalists’ group has called for a government investigation into the death of a reporter killed when suicide bombers stormed government buildings in south Afghanistan.
Omed Khpalwak, a local reporter for the BBC and Afghan news agency Pajhwok, was killed along with 18 others, including 12 young children, during an hours-long gun battle that followed the initial attacks in the province of Uruzgan last Thursday.
At a meeting of Afghan journalists yesterday to discuss the death, Zia Bomia, head of the South Asian Free Media Association in Afghanistan, said it was unclear who killed him.
“We still don’t know whether Khpalwak was killed by insurgents, government troops or foreign forces repelling the attacks,” Mr Bomia said.
He said Khpalwak had tried to hide inside the regional state television offices and appeared to have been killed by a single shot.
