The Irish Council for Civil Liberties has called for independent inquiry into the shooting dead of Mr Ronan Mac Lochainn during an aborted raid on a security van in Ashford, Co Wicklow, on Friday.
It cited what it claimed were differences in statements issued by gardai on the circumstances of the shooting. Given that the raiders were apparently under surveillance for some time, the council asked why the gardai did not arrest them "without putting the lives of civilians at risk by allowing the attempted robbery to get under way".
