BUSINESS AND tourism leaders in Waterford have called for “fair pricing” in the city during the forthcoming Tall Ships Races when up to half a million visitors are expected.
Recent reports suggested that hotels and other hospitality businesses were set to increase their prices to take advantage of the influx of tourists for the spectacular event, but the city council, Fáilte Ireland and Chamber of Commerce are urging all businesses to offer value for money.
Mayor of Waterford Cllr Mary Roche said the hosting of the Tall Ships Races presents “a priceless opportunity” to showcase the best of the city and region.
Ms Roche, Fáilte Ireland head of operations Gary Breen and Waterford Chamber chief executive Michael Garland have joined forces to back fair prices as visitors fill the area and bring extra business to shops, cafes, bars, restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, taxis and tourist attractions.
In a specific package geared towards the tourism and hospitality sector, a Tall Ships customer care charter has been developed by Fáilte Ireland.
This scheme will provide additional training for front-of-house personnel who will be among the first points of contact for visitors to the city during its hosting of dozens of tall ships and their crews.
Mr Breen said that, from Fáilte Ireland’s perspective, Waterford’s hosting of the Tall Ships Races 2011 represents one of the key events in the country this year – something reflected in the resources being deployed to promote the festival programme at home and abroad.
