THE Cabinet is today expected to approve the appointment of a successor to the outgoing Garda Commissioner, Mr Patrick Culligan. Sources yesterday confirmed the matter is likely to be dealt with at this evening's meeting.
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Patrick Byrne, is strongly tipped to take the job.
A heavy schedule could mean the decision might be postponed until next week's Cabinet deliberations but it is understood the Government would like to see an appointment this week as Mr Culligan is due to leave office on July 20th.
