The Cabinet is to meet on next Monday and Tuesday to consider its four-year economic plan.
The Dáil will begin a two-day debate the state of the economy when it returns after the weekend break on Wednesday.
Tánaiste Mary Coughlan today defended having no Dáil sitting on Tuesday on the grounds of the Cabinet meeting.
She was responding to criticism from Labour’s Joan Burton and Sinn Féin’s Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin in the Dáil this morning.
“It is clearly our intention to discuss our four-year budget and growth plan, and in case people think this has not been happening for some time, let us not forget that there has already been an adjustment of almost €14.5 billion euro over the last two years,” the Tánaiste said.
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said he hoped the Government would come into the Dáil debate and outline its view of the overall adjustment that must be made over the next number of years.
The Government should also reveal growth projections, as well as the fiscal adjustment it expected to make in the December budget.
“In the past two days I have made the point that we need independent verification of the figures upon which parties are expected to prepare their plans,” Mr Kenny added.
