President George W. Bush directed his staff to uphold the highest

ethical standards and to never take for granted the honor of working in the White House.

In his first event in the White House East Room after taking office on Saturday, Mr Bush presided over the swearing-in of his White House staff.

"Today everything is so promising and new. My hope is that the day will never come when any of us take this place for granted, and this honor for granted", Mr Bush said.

He told his staff to stay well within the boundaries that define legal and ethical conduct, show civility and avoid arrogance, and remember they are here to make progress, not just mark time.

Mr Bush said the staff should confront each other, even him, if they feel there is an ethical or legal violation. "We're all accountable to one another, and above all, we're all accountable to the law, and to the American people", he said.
