At least 44 people were killed today when their luxury bus collided with a truck packed with flammable paint near the eastern Indian city of Calcutta.

The bus carrying about 55 people was heading to Calcutta from neighbouring Orissa state when it collided head-on with the truck at Paniara, a town about 25 kilometres (16 miles) from Calcutta.

"At least 44 people were killed and 13 others suffered severe injuries after the bus caught fire," police said.

The truck driver and his assistant, who was in the passenger's seat, died instantly in the crash at about 5.00 a.m. (11.30 Irish time yesterday).

The truck was carrying paint, which caught fire after the crash. The collision knocked the bus off the highway and into a ditch.
