TWO more cases of alleged abortion at a Dublin clinic have been investigated by gardai

TWO more cases of alleged abortion at a Dublin clinic have been investigated by gardai. A final direction whether to prosecute is expected from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in at least one of the cases.

The Garda press office confirmed yesterday that a file has gone to the DPP in relation to a woman living in the north inner city on foot of a complaint she has made. The second woman is also from the northside of Dublin.

Mr Frank Crummy, a director of the Marie Stopes Reproductive Clinic at Merrion Square, Dublin, said he was unaware of the two new complaints. It is understood, however, that gardai visited the premises last week with a warrant to consult a file.

Last February, gardai arrived at the Marie Stopes premises with a search warrant and removed some correspondence.

Insp Noel White investigated the case of the woman from south Dublin who alleged that an abortion was performed on her in the Dublin clinic two years ago. The woman told gardai in a statement that the operation cost £120, considerably less than the cost of going to Britain for an abortion.

In her complaint, the woman alleged that she suffered complications as a result of the operation. She consulted a second doctor, who has also been interviewed by the Garda.

On April 11th, the DPP wrote to Insp White of Pearse Street who is now investigating at least three cases of alleged abortions carried out in Dublin.
