A religious brother at the centre of sex abuse allegations at a children's home has died, the High Court in Belfast was told yesterday.

De la Salle Brother Florence, whose real name was Joseph Scally, was principal of Rubane House boys' home at Kircubbin, Co Down, in the 1970s when he was alleged to have abused boys in his care. Brother Florence was charged at Downpatrick Crown Court in 1999 but the charges were stayed after a judge ruled there had been an abuse of process because of delay in bringing the case to court.

A former resident at Rubane House is claiming damages for alleged abuse.
