San Diego - A British woman who ran a day nursery in California has been found guilty of deadly assault in the shaking death of a 13-month-old boy last year.

Manjit Kaur Basuta (44), who moved from Ascot, Berks, to the United States in 1989, now faces 25 years to life in prison at sentencing later this month for the death of Oliver Smith.

The prosecution's main witness, an undocumented immigrant Basuta employed to help her run the day care centre at her suburban San Diego home, testified that Basuta slammed the toddler down in anger on March 16th, 1998.

Oliver died the next day in a hospital. An autopsy showed that he died from a blood clot and massive swelling of the brain. The defence argued that the boy died from a bump on the head that aggravated an existing head injury.
