The  third in line to the British throne ,Prince Harry has refused to make a public apology for his scuffle with a photographer outside a London nightclub, his spokesman has said.

It certainly seems to be the month for apologies, but no, I don't think it really requires that. I think it is fairly straightforward," spokesman Paddy Harverson to BBC Radio FiveLive.

"I think the whole thing was regretful," he added, apparently meaning to say "regrettable".

"Hopefully this sort of thing won't happen again," he added.

The 20-year-old prince was leaving the Pangaea nightclub - a known hangout for soap opera stars and fashion models - in the early hours of Thursday when he reportedly clashed with celebrity photographer Chris Uncle.

The fracas left Uncle, 24, with a cut lip. He has not pressed charges, despite alleging that Harry had "deliberately lashed out" at him.

British media reported on Friday that Harry - who has been striving to shake off a somewhat wild public image - had apologised to his father Prince Charles over the incident.

"I think he (Charles) has been supportive of his son, because I think he recognises the situation he has been in," his spokesman told the BBC.

Asked whether Harry was likely to be punished in any way, he said: "That is between the Prince of Wales and Harry."

According to the spokesman, Harry was "completely submerged" by photgraphers as he left the club and lashed out after being hit in the face with a camera.
