British defence ministers are today being briefed on US preparations for military action against Osama bin Laden.
Gen Sir Anthony Piggot, the deputy chief of defence staff, has returned from a trip to Washington last week, where he met his US counterparts.
"He will be reporting to defence ministers on the outcome of his visit," a British defence spokesman said.
According to the BBC, citing defence sources, a decision will be taken by the end of this week on exactly what Britain will contribute to the US-led riposte for the suicide plane attacks on New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
It said London had been asked to supply some ground troops, mainly special forces, and reconnaissance and attack aircraft.
British Prime Minister Mr Tony Blair was meeting senior politicians from all parties to try and shore up support for British involvement.
He has invited members of parliament's committees on foreign affairs, home affairs, defence and intelligence to Downing Street to ensure the international coalition being built abroad is matched by cross-party consensus at home.
