THE TREATMENT of a young beautician who has sued over breast augmentation and breast uplift surgery performed on her at a Dublin clinic was “grossly deficient” before, during and after that surgery, a consultant plastic surgeon has told the High Court.

Dr Kevin Cronin, who has a practice at Eccles Street, Dublin, said breast augmentation surgery is a “good and reliable” operation but breast uplift procedure is “complex” and “much more fraught” with an “unpredictable” quality of scarring.

He would have been “very reticent” to perform a breast uplift procedure in the case of Louise McCormack of The Oaks, Ridgewood, Swords, Co Dublin, who was 28 at the time of that procedure in October 2006, on grounds including her age and the fact she was a smoker.

He would always err on the side of doing a breast augmentation alone and, if uplift was required, would have tried to do something as “minimal” as possible.

The treatment of Ms McCormack in 2006 at the former Advanced Cosmetic Surgery clinic at Owenstown House, Owenstown Park, off Fosters Avenue, Mount Merrion, Co Dublin, involved “many deficiencies”, he said. The pre-operative, operative and post-operative treatment was “grossly deficient” and not of a standard to be expected from any surgeon, let alone one specialising in this difficult and delicate area, he said.

Dr Cronin was giving evidence for Ms McCormack in her action against Italian-based Marco Loiacono, a registered medical practitioner and consultant plastic surgeon, who operated on Ms McCormack and has not entered a defence in the proceedings. Judgment was reserved in the case.
