Senator Dan Boyle has been elected as the cathaoirleach, or chair, of the Green Party in an election in which all of the party members were entitled to cast a vote.

Mr Boyle came in at the top of the poll in a five-candidate race. Votes were counted on a preferendum - preferential voting - basis with five points for every first vote, four for second, three for third, two for fourth and one for every fifth vote cast.

The result was:

Senator Boyle: 2,415 points.

John Barry: 1,883 points.

Phil Kearney: 1,490 points.

The position of cathaoirleach involves chairing meetings of the national convention, management committee and other meetings related to electoral and party strategy. A total of 777 votes were cast, representing 50 per cent of the party's 1,552 eligible members.
