A 14-year-old boy died in Co Kerry while walking to school yesterday morning in an accident with an articulated lorry.
Named locally as Tungi Olatungi, he was on his way to the Community College when he is believed to have become caught in a wheel of a truck.
The accident occurred a short distance from the Clash roundabout, on a narrow road leading towards a busy industrial estate. It was extremely windy at the time.
Of Nigerian origin, Tungi had been in the school since first year and was now well into his second year. A prayer service was held at lunchtime for the boy.
Supt Pat Sullivan appealed to motorists and pedestrians in the area at the time to come forward. In particular, the Garda want to interview the driver of a white tractor unit truck, with a 40ft flat body trailer carrying a rusty 30ft container. The truck did not stop. The driver may not have been aware of what had occurred, Supt Sullivan said.
Meanwhile, gardaí in Waterford are investigating a fatal road accident yesterday at Williamstown. A 20-year old-woman was killed when the car she was driving struck a wall.
