A FOUR-year-old Irish boy is in intensive care in Spain after a near-drowning incident on the holiday island of Ibiza.
It is understood the boy fell into the pool at the Hotel Ola Club Cala Lleyna near Santa Eularia, on the island's east coast, early on Saturday evening.
A hotel lifeguard is said to have pulled the boy from the pool. The child was initially taken to Ibiza's main Can Misses Hospital but was later transferred to the Son Dureta Hospital in Palma on the neighbouring island, Majorca.
He was reported to be breathing with the help of artificial ventilation. A CAT scan has been performed to assess possible damage caused by lack of oxygen to the brain. A source at the Majorca hospital said the scan indicated there had not been any damage. "But he has obviously undergone a massive trauma and we have to wait until he comes off the ventilator to have a clearer idea of his medical condition."
The Civil Guard police have begun an investigation into how he came to fall into the pool and why he was not pulled from it sooner.
