A four-year-old boy remains in a critical condition in hospital this evening after an incident at the Leisureland swimming pool in Salthill, Co Galway, over the weekend.
The incident happened at 2.30pm yesterday when the boy got into difficulty in the main pool. Lifeguards pulled the child from the water and began administering CPR for about 15-20 minutes as he wasn’t breathing.
The boy started to breathe again by which time an ambulance from the University Hospital in Galway arrived and the paramedics took over. He was then rushed to hospital where he is in the intensive care unit.
A spokesman for Galway City Council, which runs the pool, said an internal investigation is under way.
Gary McMahon said the pool was “busy but not packed” at the time of the incident and a full quota of lifeguards was on duty.
“Our immediate concern has been and still is about the welfare of the child, and our thoughts are with him and his family,” Mr McMahon added.
A Garda spokesman said they are also investigating the incident.
